Äußerster Wohlklang ist wohl mein Ziel. Ich setze mich aber nicht hin, um einen meditativen oder einen aufmunternden Track zu komponieren. Das passiert ganz einfach. Ich muss mich mit den Ergebnissen gleichsam abfinden. Die einzige Absicht, die ich habe, ist die, möglichst absichtslos zu arbeiten. Das ist natürlich sehr schwer.

Hans-Joachim Roedelius wurde am 26.10.1934 in Berlin geboren. Sein ungemein vielfältiges Leben kann hier nur ansatzweise besprochen werden. Er gilt in Fachkreisen als Jahrhundertkünstler, als Musiker von Experimental-, Ambient- und Elektronikmusik. Bekannt wurde er vor allem als Mitbegründer der Krautrock-Bands Cluster mit Conrad Schnitzler und Dieter Moebius und Harmonia (mit Michael Rother, später kurz mit Brian Eno). Überdies betätigt er sich seit Beginn seiner musikalischen Karriere auch als Schriftsteller/Poet, Schauspieler und im Bereich bildender Kunst, als Fotograf und Filmer sowie als Physiotherapeut und Masseur. Eben durch diese seine Patienten fand er auch den Weg zur Kunst – erst zum Theater, später dann zur Musik. 1968 wechselte er von der Heil- zur Tonkunst, gründete in West-Berlin das „Artslab Zodiak“ und die Gruppe „Human Being“, aus der später weltbekannte Namen wie „Tangerine Dream“ und „AshRa Tempel“ sowie „Klaus Schulze“ hervortraten. Roedelius beherrschte kein Instrument, tastete sich durch die Welt der Klänge und Töne, um seine eigene Sprache zu finden (es war eher Lärm zu Beginn, merkte er später an). 1969 gründete er die Gruppe „Kluster“ (später „Cluster“) mit dem Beuys-Schüler Conrad Schnitzler und dem Saxofonisten Dieter Moebius, und tourten fortan quer durch Europa. 1974 gründete er mit Moebius und Michael Rother die Gruppe „Harmonia“, die jedoch 1975 schon wieder aufgelöst wurde. Das Album „Deluxe“ hatte eine starke Wirkung auf den britischen Musiker Brian Eno, der sich als großer Fan outete. Eno arbeitete seinerzeit mit David Bowie in Deutschland und nahm mit Cluster zwei weitere Alben auf. Die Band wechselte ihren Avantgarde-Sound zu einem melodischeren Musikstil („Großes Wasser“). 1978 zog Roedelius nach Niederösterreich und arbeitete an Soloplatten („Duch die Wüste“ und „Jardin au Fou“). Letzeres Album begründete auch seinen zukünftigen Stil: melodisches Klavier und dezente akustische und elektronische Instrumente. Bahnbrechend dabei seine „Selbstportrait“ – Serie. 1982 erschien sein meistverkauftetes Soloalbum „Geschenk des Augenblicks-Gift of the Moment“. Etwa ab 1989 bewegte er sich auf das Gebiet des sich gerade entwickelnden Techno Musikgenres – ohne zu realisieren, dass er damit irgendeine neue Musikrichtung mit beeinflusste („Der Ohrenspiegel“). Ein bedeutender Wendepunkt war in seiner Karriere die Veröffentlichung der „Sinfonia Contempora No.1: Von Zeit zu Zeit“. Er sagte selbst dazu: Seit dem Beginn meiner Karriere war nichts wichtiger, als meine eigene musikalische Sprache zu finden und ich habe sie, so glaube ich, gefunden“. In der Zwischenheit formierte sich Cluster neu „Apropos Cluster“. Eine Tournee nach Japan und Amerika sowie Live-Alben folgten. Im neuen Jahrtausend arbeitete er zunehmend mit anderen oft jungen Musikern zusammen. Ferner begann er in einer anderen Serie „Lieder vom Steinfeld“ zu seinen Stücken auch Gedichte zu der Musik vorzutragen. Ein weiterer Höhepunkt war die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Künstler Tim Story und das Cluster-Eröffnungskonzert zur „documente 12“ 2007 in Kassel. Ende 2010 wurde die dritte Trennung von „Cluster“ bekannt gegeben, da Dieter Moebius die Gruppe verlassen hatte. Roedelius gründete gemeinsam mit Onnen Bock und Armin Metz die Gruppe „Qluster“, die seitdem einige Alben veröffentlicht hat. Zahlloste Auftritte rund um den Globus und Hunderte von Veröffentlichungen prägen seine Biografie ab. Er erhielt zudem viele Preise, zuletzt das „Grosse Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um das Land NÖ“ und den „Bank Austria Kunstpreis 2014“ sowie die „Kaiser Friedrich III Medaille“.

My theme:

Hans-Joachim Roedelius was born on 26/10/1934 in Berlin. His enormous variety of life can only begin to be discussed here. He is regarded by experts as an artist of the century, as a musician of experimental, ambient and electronic music. He was known primarily as a co-founder of the krautrock bands Cluster with Conrad Schnitzler and Dieter Moebius and Harmonia (with Michael Rother, later short with Brian Eno). He also is active since the beginning of his musical career as a writer / poet, actor and in the field of visual art, as a photographer and filmmaker as well as a physical therapist and masseur.

Through his patients he found the way to art – first to the theater, then later to the music. In 1968 he moved from the healing arts to the art of music, founded in West Berlin the "Artslab Zodiak" and the group "Human Being", from which later world-famous names such as "Tangerine Dream", "Ashra Temple" and "Klaus Schulze" emerged. Roedelius mastered no instrument and gropes himself through the world of sounds and tones, to find his own language (it was more noise at the beginning he realized later on). In 1969 he founded the group "Kluster" (later "Cluster") with the Beuys student Conrad Schnitzler and saxophonist Dieter Moebius, and toured from then on across Europe. In 1974 he founded with Moebius and Michael Rother, the group "Harmonia", but which has been dissolved in 1975 again. The album "Deluxe" had a strong effect on the British musician Brian Eno, who came out as a big fan. Eno worked at that time with David Bowie in Germany and recorded with Cluster two albums.

The band changed its avant-garde sound to a more melodic style of music ( "Big Water"). 1978 Roedelius moved to Lower Austria and worked on solo albums ( "Durch die Wüste" and "Jardin au Fou"). The latter album also founded his future style: melodic piano and subtle acoustic and electronic instruments. Groundbreaking doing his "Self Portrait" - series. 1982 he published his best-selling solo album „Geschenk des Augenblicks-Gift of the Moment“. From about 1989 he moved to the territory of the just evolving techno music genres - without realizing his influence to any new musical style ( "Der Ohrenspiegel"). An important turning point in his career was the publication of "Sinfonia Contempora No.1: From time to time". He himself said: Since the beginning of my career nothing was more important than to find my own musical language and I have, I believe, found it. "

In the meantime Cluster formed new as "Apropos Cluster". A tour to Japan and America as well as live albums followed. In the new millennium, he increasingly collaborated with other and often young musicians. He also started with the series "Songs from Steinfeld" to read poems in combination to his music. Another highlight was the collaboration with the artist Tim Story and the Cluster opening concert for "documenta 12", 2007 in Kassel. End of 2010, the third division of "Cluster" was announced as Dieter Moebius had left the group. Roedelius founded with Onnen Bock and Armin Metz group "Qluster" which has since then released several albums. Countless appearances around the globe and hundreds of publications left its mark on his biography. He also received many awards, most recently the " Grosses Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um das Land NÖ" and "Bank Austria Arts Award 2014" and the " Kaiser Friedrich III Medaille ".
