 Hope things are good with you, and now, here's the review!

 Day One: A gruelling 1400 km two-day road trip from Hungary, across the
 wild, uncharted regions of Austria and Germany. OK, not that uncharted,
 or wild, but breathtaking nonetheless - so we take frequent excursions
 off the Autobahn to drink in the majestic splendour of the Danube valley
 under an azure blue autumnal sky, travelling at times around hairpin
 roads that would have even given Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear UK Car
 presenter) his money's worth. We slowly make our trek North Westerly,
 only stopping briefly overnight in the medieval city of Regensburg, just
 past the border in the thick wilds of the Bavarian forest.
>
 Day Two: We decide to stick to the Autobahn all the way to make up some
 lost time sightseeing, and get to Bielefeld about 4 in the afternoon.
 It's absolutely p*ssing it down. Grey skies, howling winds... I realised
 how much I'd missed the delightful Atlantic weather systems. It was like
 being back in Britain!
>
 Checked in at the hotel and we've got time to freshen up before our
 first rendezvous that evening, with Hans-Hermann and his "circus troupe"
 of assistants at the pre-gig dinner, together with a contingency of
 other stragglers from afar who have also arrived the night before the
 gig. The rendezvous point - a large, square, black, very modern looking
 clock tower in the middle of a large, square, grey shopping area;
 Germany really seems to have a thing about grey and right angles, for
 sure - is made exactly on time, where we meet HHH and his other half,
 Claudia, underneath an umbrella in the drizzling rain.
>
 There we stand, for the next half an hour, waiting for everybody else to
 show up. As we stand there getting wetter and wetter, HHH quips "It's
 funny, they're always late!", and he's right, they were...
>
 But suddenly, the Brit contingent turns up, Phil Booth, Mick Garlick and
 Michael Shipway, but strangely, no Boddy. (OK, that was a bad pun, but
 hey....). Then Stefan Schulz, Glenn from Norway, some of the Circus
helpers, and suddenly we had about a crowd of 20 or so. Without much
 more ado, we set off for the Chinese. Wringing wet, we make our way up
 the stairs, where who should we see but Ian Boddy, already seated, on
 his first beer, dry as a dry thing. Makes mental note: if we go again,
 and it's raining, make way straight to the eating place! Ian is
obviously a pro at this kind of thing :D
>
 It was a great meal, and we get to know a lot of familiar faces that
 I've already seen pixellated, on Facebook and Myspace, but these were
 actually attached to real human beings! Which was great. Lots of those
 pics are now up on various people's facebook pages.
>
 Thorsten Q's running late. He's not going to turn up tonight. Lots of
 wicked quips follow about how Edgar only lets him out of the TD dungeon
 once a year!! :D
>
 Day Three: It's cleared up a bit outside but still quite cold. Mrs CC
 (Andrea) and Daughter #2 (Alex) go for quick shopping expedition.
>
 The "Movie" officially opens it's doors at 13:00 but we make our way
 down to it at 11:30 to set up the stall. It's already full of hustle and
 bustle, the Circus crew started setting up all the equipment in the main
 auditorium at 9:00 so things are already pretty much in shape, as well
 as the stallholders like Groove, SynGate who are already deployed. We
 find our table round the corner from the entrance, convieniently with
 the bar literally behind us! Which is nice. None of those archaic "we
 can only serve you after .... " laws here, thank goodness. Andrea and
 Alex are in command now, setting up the CDs and posters. I took a laptop
 down with headphones so that people could get a sample of the music, and
 wow! here's our first customer. A guy with cameras round his neck has
 just wandered up, and in my pidgin German I'm encouraging him to don the
 phones. 5 minutes later, and he's bought Icon One and Landform! Our
 first sale! Things can only go uphill from here.
>
 We've left a gap for Uwe Cremer who will be joining us later. The crowds
 are really thickening up now, main doors have opened and it's up to us
 to grab people's attention, most of them are wandering past after a
 quick look. It's difficult to break that "never heard of them... so I'll
 move along" cycle and turn it into a "never heard of them... so I'll
 give them a try". Alex has the brainstorm of handing out our flyers
 (some quickly printed B&W A5 sheets with a few quotes and contact info)
 and we realise the first glitch - it's in English, and maybe next year
 we'll get them translated first! Still, I'm (always) impressed how many
 Germans can speak English, so things aren't turning out that bad. Some
 of those flyered have come back to listen now, it's all good stuff.
 Synth.nl (Michel) has turned up now, he's got the stall to the left of
 us. And Ian Boddy (who is the main sponsor of the even) is now setting
 up his "DiN" stall to our right. And it's time for the acts!
>
 First up is "Deep Imagination". That's pretty chillout stuff. Some real
 sax playing, some talking poetry too. Kind of an electronic floyd, if
 you will. You can see it on youtube actually if you look it up. There
 were some bad feedback moments at times though though sadly. I guess
 that's the price you play for live. But quite enjoyable all the same.
 Definitely one in my "keep" pile.
>
 Now it's back to the stall. Things are even more crowded now, and
 there's lots going on. The second act is nearly starting, and Uwe Cremer
 has just arrived. We set him up in the corner of the stall and then go
 to watch the next act.
>
 Now this next act, "Morpheus" is a mixed bag. Or, it was for me. Frank
 Dorittke can play a mean guitar, no doubt about it. And the tunes were
 all very well played, real drums being supplied by van der Heijden, some
 nice pads by Boots. Matzumi sang really nicely too. At times it was
 veering towards an Oldfield sound with FD's high register guitar. But
 the overall feeling was that we were listening to musical ideas, not
 finished songs. The tracks all seemed to start the same way they
 finished. And sounded just like it in the middle. Now, of course, the
 worst reviewer ever is a musician, but I kept thinking "this could be SO
 much better if they only...", well, I think you get the idea.
>
 So halfway through I go back to the stall to see how things are going.
 And blow me! There's Harald Grosskopf just arrived, Uwe C and me are now
 chatting to him about technical problems he's had trying to get the
 original masters of "Synthesist" updated, because the tapes are warped,
 talking about ways he could rescue them using tempo correction and such
 like. Then Stefan Erbe is tapping me on the shoulder, it's time for my
 TV interview. "Huh!?" - yes, that was my reaction too! Sounds like the
 EC crew are really pulling the stops out this time round, and are
 interviewing not only the performing artists but also any visiting
 artists who have a stall. I make my excuses to HG and grab a copy of
 "Aqual Measure" and Uwe's "Electronic Sheep" from our stall, pull Uwe
 along and hey! we're being interviewed in front of a camera about our
 last two albums! By the time that's finished so has Morpheus, so we're
 back on stall duty.
>
 Next up is Harald Grosskopf. For me this was one of the main reasons for
 coming down. There's some kind of technical hitch and the crowds are
 getting restless outside the auditorium doors. Half an hour after he's
 supposed to start, we're let in. There's Harald's gleaming e-kit set up
 at the front of the stage. Harald is looking over it before retiring to
 a sideways standing position in front of a laptop. Udo Hanten is
 standing to his right, mirrored, with another laptop, performance pad
 and modular sequencer behind him. There's no Steve Baltes playing as
 originally billed. I'd heard that his working commitments were too
 great. So, the lights dim, and here's Harald's signature drum beats. On
 sequencer. Huh? Harald's nowhere close to the empty drumkit prominently
 at the front of the stage. He looks like he's enjoying himself though,
 imagine a Kraftwerk performance where they stand in front on podiums,
 but with HG and UH at least they're more animated. Much more! Second
 track and he's STILL not touched the drums!! Now some people are
 actually leaving. I stay, because I'm intrigued. There's no sign of any
 musical keyboard, for example - but HG is a drummer, after all. Then the
 penny drops. Here is a *percussionist* doing Berlin School, not a
 keyboardist. So he's concentrating madly (as is UH) on the patterns, the
 rhythms, the beats, the pulse, not the melody. It's raw at times, lots
 of samples, almost (but not quite) touching on dance music. Then he
 mimes an air guitar. We laugh and clap - but some more people leave.
 It's still quite packed but I get the feeling that many here just don't
 "get" things that are even slightly off the beaten track.You know what?
 This is actually adventurous, almost audacious! The beat, the timing,
 the groove, the feel is constantly shimmering and I find my feet are
 tapping - how often does that happen at an EM gig! I think the ones who
 stayed are now being rewarded, the audience is applauding louder and
 louder between each track. And hats off to HG, he's pulled this off
without his keyboardist. So thumbs up to (for me) the highlight of the
day, albeit not the one I was expecting - Harald *did* actually sit in
 front of his drums 3 times I think in total but that wasn't the point! :)
>
 Back to the stall and things are still hectic. Some stalls are actually
 packing up, it is getting late now and Spyra is on, but I'm still
 talking to new listeners of the CC music - overall, I think out of
 everybody who listened (who we MANAGED to get to listen that is!), only
3 people pulled the "oh my god! it's got drums AND guitars! ehttp://wwwww!"
 face, and out of the remainder about two thirds actually bought
 something. Which was very very encouraging. As always, it's like your
 quote - "give it a listen!" that's the hardest part for sure.
 Back into the auditorium quickly to catch some Spyra. Yep, deep, classic
 Berlin School sequences. Tick. Thorsten Q's playing with them. Tick.
 Live percussion. Tick. It's all there. As it always has been, and always
 will.
 Back out again, it's packing up time. Uwe's got a train to catch and
 it's been a long, but very enjoyable day. Summed up quite well by
Hans-Hermann's big-top-hatted "ringmeister" the night before on meeting
 us... "Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends!".

 I really hope it doesn't :)

Hallo lieber Frank,

ich möchte mich einfach noch einmal für diesen tollen Tag gestern bei euch bedanken, das war einfach grandios. Zwar habe ich nicht viel von den Konzerten mitbekommen, was schade war, aber euch live bei eurer eigenen Veranstaltung zu erleben, war schon etwas Besonderes.

Viele gute Gespräche mit anderen Musikern und Nichtmusikern, die ich da gestern führen konnte, interessante neue Kontakte, die sich ergeben haben. Wow. Ich bin immer noch ganz begeistert :-)Und mal ehrlich - Du in dem Kostüm - das machte schon was her ;-)

Überhaupt die ganze Herzlichkeit von euch und meinen Musikerkollegen, die von allen rüberkam, war einfach nur toll. Alle vermittelten mir das Gefühl, dazu zu gehören, willkommen zu sein in der EM-Familie. Ich hatte zudem auch noch ein sehr interessantes Gespräch mit Gerd Wienekamp und Robert Schröder.

Seid ihr denn wenigstens wieder einigermaßen fit? Ich fühle mich doch recht ausgeruht, trotz wenigem Schlaf über die letzten Tage.

herzlichen Glückwunsch zu Eurem Erfolg "Electronic Circus Festival 2010". Wir haben als Musiker ein fantastisches Organisations-Team erlebt. Der herzliche Empfang, die Unterstützung und die perfekte Organisation, das alles war sehr beeindruckend.

Auch im Namen meiner Mitmusiker Thorsten Rentsch und Stefan Höllering sage ich herzlichen Dank und wünsche Euch alles Gute für das EC Festival 2011!

hi Frank,

bevor ich nochmal ein Mail an euer ganzes Team verfasse, möchte ich mich
auch nochmal ganz persönlich bei DIR bedanken.

Was soll man sagen? Alles, was ihr euch ausgedacht habt, es hat
funktioniert, das war ein für die heutige Zeit unglaubliches Event. ihr
habt es geschafft, den alten, nein, es ist ein neuer Spirit entstanden,
ähnlich dem der 60er und 70er, als die Kunst noch im Vordergrund stand,
von vielen Seiten kreative Energien einflossen, die eben keinerlei
Marktinteressen folgten. genau das ist im hier und heute passiert, weil
ihr es gemacht habt und weil ihr es mit einem Konzept gemacht habt und
weil es die Leute da draussen gibt, die eben genau danach hungern, die
es vermisst haben.

Es braucht für sowas aber einen, der alle mitreisst und der bist du. mit
deiner positiven Energie, einem Hauch Wahnsinn und viel Musikverstand
hast du es geschafft, etwas Wunderbares zu entfachen.

Die tollen Feedbacks, die jetzt kommen, die habt ihr euch sowas von
verdient! Bleibe ruhig noch ein paar Tage in dem Traum... :-) .

Schön, dass wir uns kennengelernt haben und danke, dass ihr mir vertraut
habt! Das war der bisher schönste Gig meines Lebens!

wirklich 'lauft'.

die Veranstaltung gestern war wieder super und jetzt waren auch mehr Besucher da! Herzlichen Glückwunsch!
Für mich waren die 3 Konzerte von Deep Imagination, Morpheuzs und Spyra absolute Spitzenklasse.
Die Werbung für die Veranstaltung von Ron Boots bei seinem Dreamscape Radio war auch toll gemacht.
Im nächsten Jahr werde ich wieder kommen.

Ne im Ernst   1a Festival  tolle Atmosphäre und mit ganz großen Künstlern

!!!  Der opener !!! Klasse mal was anderes mit dem Sax und so . Ron

und Freunde brauch ich nix zu erzählen  wissen wir alle ;-)  tja

Harald hat mich persönlich ein wenig enttäuscht, hat sich aber nach dem

Gespräch mit Bernd Scholl  wieder relativiert  ;-) du hast recht sowas

muss es auch geben  , ach hätten die beiden doch besser ihr Tun vorher erklärt

 ;-) und der Titel der Show war ja dann auch mal irreführend . na ja

 Aber dennoch wars gut und kam bei einigen ja auch so an  ;-) Ich werd

 mir auf alle Fälle die Studio-CD anhören  . das Highlight für mich

 waren aber Spyra und Lang .  klasse Sache was die beiden da gemacht

 hatten trotz widriger Umstände:  Autopanne und getrenntes Anreisen . der Chris war zwar ein wenig nervös  aber auch das gehört dazu .

 Schöne Idee mit diesem Instrument und mit der Erbauerrin auf der Bühne, .

 obwohl ich das nicht so richtig verstanden hatte weder wie dieses

 Teil nu heisst noch wer das nu genau war die junge Dame  , die da am Anfang sehr

 gelangweilt aussah auf der Bühne   "" gg ""

 Also Fazit : rundherum ein gelungenes Festival  das wohl seit Samstag

 endgültig etabliert sein dürfte .  Hey und das ! ist auch aufgelöst  :  

 Essen ist zu weit entfernt   ;-)   Hab  mindestens 6 Leute aus der Region

 gesehen  !!

Electronic Circus 2010 was great!

Last weekend I visited the Electronic Circus in Bielefeld. I had a really great time there. Here you see a picture of me together with Stefan Erbe (on the left) who did the moderation already for the third time and Hans Herman Hess (in the middle) who is one of the organizers. The concerts were very nice. I especially liked the Morpheusz concert where Ron Boots, Eric and Harold van der Heijden en Frank Dorittke played. But more important the atmosphere was so great. As you could see everybody is in a good mood and drinking a beer along too.

The great thing was also that there were a lot of stands from a lot of musicians. I had a stall there as well. The whole idea of course is to sell some CD's there but I heard a lot that people already had my CD's and that is also nice to hear of course :) I did sell some, but more important I met a lot of people that I know from MySpace and Facebook like Stefan Schällmann in the picture here. It is always nicer to talk to people in person of course. It was also good to see that there were a lot more visitors than last year. A good thing for the organization of course. I would like to say THANK YOU to the organizers of the Electronic Circus for a great event. I'll be there next year for sure. Want to see what you missed? Go visit the website

Electronic Circus 2010, Movie Bielefeld, 25.09.2010

 

Der Electronic Circus mausert sich zu einem sehr wichtigen EM-Festival. Das zeigte sich am 25.09.2010 allein schon durch die beeindruckende Zuschauerzahl. Ob das Bielefelder „Movie“, wo der EC nun zum dritten Mal stattfand, ausverkauft war, vermag ich nicht zu sagen. Zumindest war es sehr voll, ganz im Gegensatz zum letzten Jahr, als zu Beginn des ersten Konzerts der Saal noch halb leer war. Diesmal sah ich beim Team des Electronic Circus nur zufriedene Gesichter.

Die Organisation des Festivals war wieder prima. Kleinere Probleme, die ich als Zuschauer mitbekam, gab es nur beim Umbau auf der Bühne. Dadurch begannen die Konzerte – außer dem ersten – verspätet.

Es waren wieder etliche Musiklabel mit einem CD-Stand vertreten sowie auch diverse Musiker, die ihre Werke höchstselbst an den Mann resp. die Frau brachten. Das Foyer des Movies war gut bestückt mit Gelegenheiten zum Hören von CDs und natürlich deren Kauf. Noch viel mehr Möglichkeiten gab es zum Gespräch mit den vielen anwesenden Musikern und „Machern“ der EM-Szene.

Ein anderer Grund, warum der Electronic Circus in meinen Augen wichtig ist, ist die Riege von hochkarätigen Musikern, die diesmal auf der Bühne standen. Es ist schon bewundernswert, wie die „Zirkusleute“ es schaffen, diese Künstler zusammenzuholen.

Das erste Konzert nach der Begrüßung durch den „besten Moderator der Welt“, Stefan Erbe, wurde von Deep Imagination bestritten. Ich hatte bislang nur vereinzelt mal ein Stück von Deep Imagination gehört. Jetzt hatte ich die Gelegenheit, die Band (Thorsten Sudler-Mainz, Thorsten Rentsch und Stefan Höllering) etwas ausführlicher zu erleben. Auffallend war schon, dass mit Stefan Höllering ein Saxophonist dazugehört. Er spielte Tenor- und Electro-Saxophon, was der Musik einen recht ungewöhnlichen Klang verlieh. Insgesamt war das keineswegs „EM-Mainstream“, was die Drei uns boten. Die meisten Stücke stammten vom aktuellen Album „Awareness“, eines gehört zum Repertoire von Art Of Infinity, dem anderen Projekt von Thorsten Sudler-Mainz. Es war ein angenehmes, unaufgeregtes Konzert als Einstimmung auf den Tag.

Nach der Umbaupause und einem etwas ausführlicheren Sound-Check trat die neue Formation Morpheusz auf. Wenn auch die Band neu ist, die Musiker gehören eher zu den „alten Hasen“: Ron Boots, Harold und Eric van der Heijden und Frank Dorittke. Nach den Auftritten in Derby und Oirschot räumten sie nun in Bielefeld ab – und das ist keineswegs übertrieben. Wann hat man es schon mal erlebt, dass bei einem Elektronik-Konzert mitgeklatscht wurde? Morpheusz schafften es bei „Da Capo“, einem Titel von Eric van der Heijden von 1998. Auf der Bühne ging es richtig zur Sache und zwischen den Titeln brachte Ron ein paar launige Sprüche. Natürlich wurden Morpheusz nicht ohne Zugabe von der Bühne gelassen. Und sie holten sich noch Verstärkung dazu: Kathrin Manz alias Matzumi gab der dargebotenen Musik mit ihrer Stimme eine wunderbare Atmosphäre.

Auf das nächste Konzert war ich am meisten gespannt: Harald Großkopf und Udo Hanten. Angekündigt war auch Steve Baltes, der aber leider absagen mußte. So blieben die beiden „Altmeister“ unter sich.
Die Ankündigungen zum Electronic Circus hatte ich so verstanden, dass das Harald-Großkopf-Album „Synthesist“ zum 30. „Geburtstag“ live auf die Bühne gebracht werden sollte. Dass nach 30 Jahren die Musik nicht mehr so klingen würde wie zur Entstehungszeit, und „Synthesist“ live ohnehin anders sein würde, das war mir schon klar. Trotzdem habe ich nur wenige der Titel von „Synthesist“ erkannt.
Vielleicht habe ich mir einfach falsche Vorstellungen gemacht, möglicherweise habe ich auch die Informationen im Vorfeld des Electronic Circus mißverstanden. Eine gewisse Enttäuschung war jedenfalls vorhanden. Man kann es aber auch so sehen: Bei Harald Großkopf ist man vor Überraschungen nicht sicher. Zuletzt hatte ich Harald bei der Schallwelle-Preisverleihung gesehen, als er sowohl solo als auch mit Ashra auf der Bühne war. Sein Konzert beim Electronic Circus war etwas völlig anderes als der Solo-Auftritt bei der Schallwelle. Udo Hanten darf man ja schließlich auch nicht unterschlagen, wobei ich nie weiß, wer welchen Anteil an einem Konzert hat. Auf alle Fälle war es das rhythmischste Konzert des Tages, und mehrmals wurden die bpm angekündigt.
Das Schlagzeug wurde nur wenige Male eingesetzt. Und zumindest in diesem Punkt bin ich nicht alleine – es gab Besucher, die Harald Großkopf sehr gerne öfter an den Drums gesehen und gehört hätten.
Sehr unterhaltsam war es dagegen, Udo Hanten und Harald Großkopf auf der Bühne agieren zu sehen. Harald war ständig in Bewegung und bestritt das Konzert mit vollem Körpereinsatz (soweit das an den Geräten möglich war), wogegen Udo eher „minimalistisch“ wirkte: hier ein Knopfdruck, da ein Regler... Das ist sicher keine erschöpfende Schilderung seines Anteils am Konzert, aber es wirkte sehr witzig auf der Bühne. Außerdem nahmen sich die beiden ständig gegenseitig auf den Arm und zeigten sich selbstironisch. Udo Hanten kommunizierte immer wieder mit dem Publikum, und das nicht nur zwischen den Stücken, sondern mit Blicken und Gesten auch während wir ordentlich was „auf die Ohren“ bekamen.

Wolfram Spyra und Chris Lang gehörte das letzte Konzert des  Tages. Der Spyra ist musikalisch sehr vielseitig und er ist in unterschiedlichen Genres zu Hause. Mit Chris Lang hat er aber schon ein Album („Achtundsechzig 24 – Live @ Toskana-Therme“) veröffentlicht, welches ich sehr schätze. So hatte ich zumindest eine Ahnung, in welche Richtung die Musik beim EC gehen könnte.
Wolfram hatte seine Instrumente hinter den Bowchimes aufgebaut, und so war es sehr schön, über eine Kamera, die eine Aufsicht lieferte, einen Blick „hinter die Kulisse“ werfen zu können. Chris Lang war seitlich davon mit seinen Synthesizern gut zu sehen. Meine musikalische Erwartung wurde bedient: Klassische Elektronische Musik vom Feinsten. Aber natürlich begnügten sich Wolfram und Chris nicht damit. Von Beginn an waren auf der Bühne zwei Instrumente zu sehen, die aussahen wie umgedrehte Steeldrums. Es waren „Caisa-Drums“, und die eine wurde von Kirsten Oestreich gespielt, die zweite von Chris Lang. Der Klang überraschte mich positiv, denn das hatte mit Steeldrums nichts zu tun. Gespielt wurden die Caisa-Drums mit den Händen, und Kirsten Oestreich zauberte damit einen „akustischen Sequencer“. Es war wirklich erstaunlich, was aus diesen Instrumenten herauszuholen war. Und es paßte wunderbar zur EM von Spyra und Lang. Ich fand sehr interessant, wie sehr die unterschiedliche Spieltechnik von Chris Lang und Kirsten Oestreich den Klang der Caisa-Drums veränderte.
Die Vielseitigkeit und Spontaneität in der Elektronikmusik wurde mit der Einladung Wolframs an den ebenfalls im Publikum anwesenden Thorsten Quaeschning, doch zu einer kleinen Session auf die Bühne zu kommen, unter Beweis gestellt. Chris Lang hatte eine Sequenz vorbereitet, die Wolfram Spyra nicht kannte, wie er sagte. Thorsten Quaeschning natürlich genauso wenig. Daraus machten die Musiker eine herrliche Improvisation.
Als Zugabe kam keine Elektronik mehr zum Einsatz. Chris begann auf seiner Caisa-Drum zu spielen, kurz darauf schloss Wolfram sich an – an derselben Caisa-Drum. Optisch war es schon Klasse, und musikalisch war es so gut, dass ich keinerlei Synthesizer vermißt habe!

Ein weiterer kleiner Kritikpunkt sei mir aber doch noch gestattet. Wie auch im letzten Jahr meine ich, dass die Möglichkeiten der im Movie vorhandenen Lichtanlage nicht ausreichend genutzt werden. Ich denke, da ist mehr drin.
Das tut meiner Begeisterung über den Electronic Circus im allgemeinen und den Circus 2010 im speziellen keinen Abbruch. Gut, dass so viele Besucher dort waren und die Arbeit des Teams vom EC bestätigt haben. So werden wir wohl hoffentlich in den Genuss eines weiteren Electronic Circus 2011 kommen!
